The highly popular fantasy football blockchain game, Sorare, is expected to expand and launch a baseball/MLB version of their game. Going from only football, where they managed to rack in backing from 247 clubs, who they now cover. These came through either individual club partnerships or a partnership with a league, like Major League Soccer (MLS).
Sorare’s New MLB Game
Earlier in the week, Sorare said that it had signed a massive deal with Major League Baseball (MLB), together with its Players’ Association. Their plans are now aimed at launching a new baseball fantasy sports game. This move enables it to build on its already successful football game that covers football globally.
This now becomes the first new sport that Sorare is venturing into since its football start in 2019. As it does in the football version, the MLB game will enable users to trade various collectible cards of players in the associated league as Ethereum NFTs. Furthermore, the users can purchase and sell items on the marketplace.
On top of that, add players into their fantasy lineups to earn points every week. For clarification purposes, these points are based on the players’ real-life MLB performances. Players are scheduled to come in various rarities, as in the football game.
The more popular a player is in real life, or the rarer their card becomes, the more expensive it will be. Sorare’s work on the art of NFTs is continuous. Nonetheless, they strive to maintain a similar style to their football NFTs.
The executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA), Tony Clark, stated:
“We are very excited about our partnership and the effect Sorare’s first foray into North American sports will have on the growth of our game globally.”
MLB’s NFT History
Before the latest deal with Sorare, the MLB and Topps developed NFTs on their platform on the WAX blockchain. They aimed to become environmentally friendly. The NFTs on the platform replicate Topps baseball cards in real life. Baseball cards have historically been one of the largest and most popular collectibles.
Furthermore, they have seen millions of collectors over a period spanning many decades. Topps’ first real-life baseball cards were developed in1951, more than 70 years ago. Furthermore, just a few individual teams have released their NFTs.
What IS SoRare?
SoRare is a fantasy sports game powered by the Ethereum blockchain. They make partnerships with leagues and clubs, predominantly in football. Now in baseball via their new partnership with the MLB. Each of these trading cards on the platform is Ethereum NFTs.
Users can buy and sell on their marketplace and add to the fantasy teams to aim to earn some points based on real-life performances in the players’ respective leagues.
The popularity and rarity of every player are reflective of their pricing on the marketplace, with some of the most popular players reaching thousands of dollars, like Lionel Messi’s first card selling for $11,000.
