Reddit social media/community app is airdropping free Polygon blockchain NFTs to its most loyal users. They unleashed the ‘Collectible Avatars’ in July, and sell them to those who do not qualify for the airdrop. The move comes in a series of Reddit getting further into the blockchain, cryptocurrency, and NFT spaces.
The company confirmed an airdrop of their ‘Collectible Avatars’ NFTs to top users.
The Reddit Airdrop (Who Is Qualified?)
The community platform announced on the server: r/CollectibleAvatars that they would be airdropping collectible avatars to their top community builders, free. This post was published 9 days ago, and they have now been rolling them out since then.
Moreover, they mentioned four styles of Collectible Avatars that qualified users could choose from.
For clarification, those users who qualify, need to have hit a minimum amount of ‘Karma’. On Reddit, karma is a reflection of the amount of money your contribution means to the community. Users can earn karma in various ways: commenting, posting, giving, and receiving awards.
People in the Reddit community mostly joke about Karma being “fake internet points”, but Reddit has now gone out of its way to find utility for it, via the Reddit NFT airdrop. The users will have already been notified in case they qualified for the Reddit airdrop. However, the amount of Karma needed was unconfirmed at the time of this announcement.
Today, Polygon-based NFTs are now on OpenSea. The floor price of the 16,000 items sits at 0.012 ETH.
Reddit In NFTs
Reddit has been a huge backer of NFTs for some time now. In the past, there were many rumors around a new NFT marketplace on Reddit, and they tested NFT PFPs on the platform, as well. In June 2022, the firm partnered with Gary Vaynerchuk’s VaynerNFT to develop ‘The ABCs of NFTs Playbook’, a recourse guiding new users into NFTs.
It is also important to state that the r/NFT community on the platform has more than 490,000 members, so the popularity of NFTs for Reddit users is clear.
Why Polygon For The Airdrop?
To put it simply, Polygon has zero gas fees for the creation of nonfungible tokens, with similar utilities to minting on Ethereum. They work ideally for the airdrop of lots of NFTs, or giveaways. Most projects have used the blockchain for the same types of drops, including Cool Cats who managed to host a Halloween giveaway to anybody who entered a costume competition.
Beyond all that, projects who expect huge amounts of small transactions to happen with their nonfungible tokens will mostly turn to Polygon for their needs. An example of this is The Sandbox, whose in-game assets run primarily on Polygon.
